Pittsburgh Steelers may have found a hidden gem in quarterback Will Howard, as reports from the team’s rookie minicamp suggest that coaches were “immediately blown away” by the former Kansas State standout’s performance and presence on the field.

Howard, a mid-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, arrived in Pittsburgh with modest expectations, largely viewed as a developmental prospect behind the team’s current quarterback depth. However, within just a few days of workouts and meetings, Steelers coaches are raving about the rookie’s arm strength, football IQ, and leadership qualities.

“He came in like a pro,” said offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. “You can tell he’s spent time in a well-coached system. His command in the huddle, his ability to process quickly—it’s rare for a guy this early in his NFL journey.”

Head coach Mike Tomlin echoed the sentiment, praising Howard’s poise and demeanor. “He’s not overwhelmed by the moment. He’s sharp, competitive, and clearly hungry to prove himself,” Tomlin said. “We’re excited to see how he continues to develop.”

Sources inside the organization noted that Howard’s deep ball accuracy and ability to quickly pick up the playbook stood out immediately. In his first practice, he reportedly made several throws that had coaches and veterans nodding in approval.

While it’s far too early to speculate on Howard’s role this season, his strong early impression may shake up the quarterback room, especially if he continues to build on his initial momentum throughout training camp.

Fans are also taking notice. Highlights from the first open practice, including a perfectly placed 40-yard touchdown pass to a rookie receiver, have begun circulating on social media, fueling optimism among the Steelers faithful.

Whether he sees the field in 2025 or not, one thing is certain—Will Howard is already turning heads in Pittsburgh.
