Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya suffered an oblique injury during Saturday’s game against the Reds and has been placed on the 10-day injured list.
The extent of the injury is still unclear, as he’s scheduled for imaging in Chicago on Tuesday, according to manager Craig Counsell.
In response, the Cubs called up catcher Reese McGuire from Triple-A Iowa to join the team for Sunday’s game in Cincinnati. Conveniently, the Iowa Cubs were playing nearby in Columbus, allowing McGuire to arrive quickly.
Amaya had been enjoying a strong season, hitting .286/.320/.516 with nine doubles and four home runs in 26 games, splitting time with Carson Kelly behind the plate.
McGuire, a veteran with 355 MLB games under his belt, was signed to a minor-league deal in January, briefly left the organization in mid-May, then re-signed days later.
He was hitting .280 with three home runs at Iowa. While Amaya is out, Kelly is expected to handle most of the catching duties, with McGuire serving in a backup role a couple times per week.
The Cubs’ 40-man roster remains full, and no additional move was needed to add McGuire.
