Doug Gilmour Named New President of the Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto, ON — In a move that has stunned the hockey world and electrified fans across Leafs Nation, the Toronto Maple Leafs have appointed franchise legend Doug Gilmour as the team’s new President of Hockey Operations.
The announcement was made Friday morning by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), just one day after confirming Brendan Shanahan’s 11-year tenure would not be extended. Gilmour, who captained the Leafs during one of their most memorable eras in the early 1990s, now returns to lead the team off the ice, inheriting the challenge of delivering the long-elusive Stanley Cup.
“It’s the greatest honour of my life,” said Gilmour, 61, during a packed press conference at Scotiabank Arena. “This city, this team — they’re in my blood. I know what this jersey means to people. And I promise you, I’ll give everything I’ve got to bring that Cup back to Toronto.”
Known affectionately as “Killer” for his relentless two-way play and fierce leadership, Gilmour instantly became a fan favourite after arriving in Toronto in 1992. Under his captaincy, the Leafs reached back-to-back conference finals, reawakening the franchise from decades of dormancy.
Now, he’s back — this time in a suit — and tasked with building a new chapter of success.

“Doug is more than a Leafs icon — he’s a born leader,” said MLSE President and CEO Keith Pelley. “He understands this market, this pressure, and most importantly, this fan base. We’re confident he can unite the organization under one clear, passionate vision.”
