PITTSBURGH, PA — One of the most revered figures in Pittsburgh Steelers history is back on the sidelines. Dermontti Dawson, the Hall of Fame center who anchored the Steelers’ offensive line throughout the 1990s, has officially joined the coaching staff as an assistant coach. His return signals a new chapter for the franchise as they set their sights on reclaiming the AFC North crown.
Dawson, a seven-time Pro Bowler and six-time All-Pro, is widely credited with revolutionizing the center position during his 13-year career in the black and gold. Known for his rare athleticism and ability to pull from the center spot, Dawson became a staple of Pittsburgh’s identity—tough, smart, and relentless.
Now, nearly 25 years after his retirement, Dawson is back to help shape the next generation of Steelers.
“It’s a blessing to return to the organization that gave me everything,” Dawson said in a team statement. “I’m here to give back, to mentor, and to help this team reach the level we all know it’s capable of.”
The Steelers, who have shown promise but struggled with consistency in recent seasons, believe Dawson’s leadership and technical knowledge can give them an edge—particularly in the trenches, where games are often won or lost. Head coach Mike Tomlin praised the hire, calling Dawson “a living example of Steelers football.”
