Newcastle United are said to be pushing to complete a deadline-day move for Reims midfielder Patrick Zabi, with French outlet So Foot News reporting growing confidence around a deal.
The Magpies have been tracking Zabi for some time after the teenager caught the eye with a series of impressive performances in Ligue 1 this season.
Despite being just 19, the Ivorian has already featured 21 times in all competitions, contributing two goals and three assists, and is widely regarded as one of the brightest young midfield prospects in France.
Zabi’s energetic box-to-box style has reportedly appealed to Eddie Howe and Newcastle’s recruitment team, who see him as a long-term investment with significant upside.
While there has been no confirmation over the exact fee required to prise him away from Reims, the midfielder is expected to agree to a four- or five-year contract should the move be finalised.
Newcastle push for late Zabi deal
Newcastle are believed to be working behind the scenes to wrap up the transfer before the deadline, with suggestions that the deal could involve a record-breaking figure for Reims.
Reports indicate the fee could exceed the €35 million (£30 million) Paris Saint-Germain paid for Hugo Ekitike, which would make Zabi the club’s most expensive sale to date.
The current plan would see Zabi remain in France for the rest of the season, allowing him to continue his development at Reims before linking up with Howe’s squad in the summer.
Although viewed primarily as a player for the future, Newcastle are also thought to believe he could push for first-team involvement sooner rather than later.
Sky Sports News reporter Pete Graves has described Newcastle as “big admirers” of the midfielder, with comparisons already being drawn in France to former Manchester United star Paul Pogba due to Zabi’s physical presence and technical ability on the ball.
Concerns over Joelinton’s recent form have also underlined the need for midfield reinforcements.
The Brazilian has struggled to reach the levels he previously set, while a recent injury has further highlighted Newcastle’s lack of physical depth in central areas.
Meanwhile, Newcastle dismissed claims that Arsenal had made a late approach for Sandro Tonali.
The Italy international remains a key figure under Howe, and suggestions of interest from the Gunners were firmly played down as unfounded.
