With most of the offseason roster-building complete, the New York Giants have shifted into wait mode, as fans count down the days until training camp. Still, a few minor moves remain on the horizon. Undrafted free agents are still being added, and the 90-man roster is expected to see some shuffling throughout the summer. As the NFL season approaches, veteran free agents who have yet to sign could find new opportunities as well.
One player who could be a smart addition for the Giants is wide receiver Gabe Davis, recently released by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Davis could offer a boost to New York’s thin group of outside receivers.
Before the NFL schedule was released on Wednesday, Davis visited with Giants GM Joe Schoen, who provided some insight during an appearance on Up & Adams.
“Gabe came in yesterday,” Schoen told host Kay Adams. “Obviously, I have a history with him—we drafted him in Buffalo. Dabes [Brian Daboll] was there, and Chad Hall, who coached receivers in Buffalo and Jacksonville, is now our assistant quarterbacks coach. Gabe is coming off an injury, Jacksonville let him go, and this was more of a ‘get-to-know-you’ visit. He hadn’t seen our facility or met our staff. We went to dinner, and we’ll see what happens next.”

The connection between Davis and the Giants coaching staff is clear. During his final two seasons in Buffalo—when Schoen and Daboll were still there—Davis totaled 70 receptions for 1,148 yards and 13 touchdowns. He thrived in a specific role: stretching the field as a deep threat.
While Davis isn’t known for precise route running, yards after the catch, or reliable hands, his knack for big plays has kept him relevant. If healthy, he could represent a meaningful upgrade over Jalin Hyatt, who’s struggled to fill a similar role across his first two seasons in New York.
Given the familiarity with the coaching staff and a clear need at the position, a potential reunion in East Rutherford makes sense. But for now, nothing is official.
