Maple Leafs Set to Acquire Tyler Myers in Blockbuster Trade with Vancouver Canucks
The Toronto Maple Leafs are set to make a bold move to bolster their blue line, with reports indicating that they have reached an agreement to acquire towering defenceman Tyler Myers from the Vancouver Canucks. According to sources close to the negotiations, the trade has been agreed in principle and Myers is expected to join the Maple Leafs ahead of the upcoming season.
The deal, initially proposed on PuckPedia’s PuckGM platform, will reportedly see Toronto send a third-round draft pick along with forwards Nick Robertson and another pending restricted free agent to Vancouver. While the Canucks have not yet formally announced the trade, both organizations are believed to have signed off on the framework.
Myers, 35, brings immense size and experience to the Maple Leafs’ defensive corps. Standing at 6-foot-8 and weighing 229 pounds, the veteran defenceman has spent the past five seasons with the Canucks, where he developed into a reliable presence on the right side. Known for his physical style of play and ability to kill penalties, Myers is expected to add a new dimension to a Leafs defence that has long been criticized for lacking grit and size in key moments.
“We needed to get bigger and stronger on the back end,” a source within the Maple Leafs front office said. “Myers gives us a guy who can handle tough minutes, clear the net, and bring a veteran presence in high-pressure games. He knows what it takes to compete deep into the season.”
The acquisition comes as Toronto continues to reshape its roster following another early playoff exit. General Manager Brad Treliving has made no secret of his desire to change the team’s identity, especially on defence, and Myers fits the bill perfectly.
Nick Robertson’s inclusion in the deal comes as little surprise. The 23-year-old winger requested a trade last season due to a lack of consistent playing time, and the situation didn’t improve in the postseason. Despite a solid regular season in which he tallied 15 goals in 69 games, Robertson was a frequent healthy scratch during the playoffs, only suiting up for three games and scoring once.
“Nick’s a talented player, and we believe he still has significant upside,” a Canucks representative told local media. “He’ll have a great opportunity to play meaningful minutes here in Vancouver.”
Myers, who waived his modified no-trade clause to join Toronto, is reportedly enthusiastic about the move. A source close to the player confirmed he’s looking forward to competing in a hockey-crazed market and sees the Maple Leafs as a legitimate contender.
“He’s excited to be part of a team with so much offensive talent and believes he can help bring more balance and toughness to their back end,” the source said.
The trade is expected to be finalized pending physicals and league approval. If completed, it will mark a significant early offseason move for the Maple Leafs as they aim to build a more battle-tested, physically imposing roster heading into the 2025–26 campaign.
