Matt Targett has found renewed momentum this season after securing regular first-team action on loan at Middlesbrough, who are firmly in the mix for Premier League promotion.
Hence, his stay at the Riverside Stadium could be cut short, with Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe accepting the club is still considering whether to activate a recall clause before the
January transfer window closes.
Targett joined Newcastle from Aston Villa in 2022 in a deal worth around £15 million but has struggled to cement a long-term role at St James’ Park.
Over the past two Premier League campaigns, the experienced left-back made just five league appearances, gradually falling down the pecking order as Newcastle evolved into a Champions League-chasing side.
With limited opportunities available, the decision was made last summer to send the 30-year-old out on loan to Middlesbrough for the final year of his contract.
The move has worked well for both player and club so far.
Targett has enjoyed consistent minutes and has been an important figure for Michael Carrick’s side as they push for promotion.
His performances have reminded many of his reliability and experience at the top level.
Previously, Howe had played down the possibility of recalling the defender mid-season. However, Newcastle’s defensive situation has changed significantly in recent weeks.
Injuries to Tino Livramento, Emil Krafth and Fabian Schär have left the Magpies stretched at the back, particularly in wide defensive areas.
At present, Lewis Hall is the only fully fit natural left-back available to Howe.
Given those circumstances, bringing Targett back as cover is now a realistic option.
Speaking ahead of the transfer deadline, Howe confirmed that the situation remains under discussion.
“That’s something we’ll be talking about right up until the end of the window,” the Newcastle boss told reporters, stopping short of making a final commitment.
While supporters continue to hope for fresh faces, Howe also reiterated that Newcastle are not currently planning to bring in new signings before the window shuts.
That stance may frustrate fans amid a disappointing league campaign, but the manager was keen to stress that finances are not the issue.
“All I can assure everybody is that there is money to spend and the club are willing to spend it,” Howe explained.
“It’s not about holding anything back, but we have to operate within the rules, and that’s extremely important.
As the deadline approaches, the decision on Targett could yet prove crucial, both for Newcastle’s defensive depth and Middlesbrough’s promotion ambitions.
