The Buffalo Bills have begun their voluntary offseason workouts, with quarterback Josh Allen among the early participants. However, running back James Cook was notably absent. His decision to skip the workouts is likely linked to ongoing contract negotiations.
Cook, 25, is entering the final year of his rookie deal and is reportedly seeking a contract extension. The gap between his expectations and what the Bills are offering seems significant. After Saquon Barkley signed a $42.1 million, two-year contract with the Eagles, Cook posted “$15 mill a year” on social media—an apparent reference to his desired salary.
Drafted in the second round in 2022, Cook signed a four-year, $5.83 million contract. He earned a base salary of $1.16 million in 2024 and is set to receive $5.271 million in 2025.
Josh Allen addressed Cook’s absence, saying he respects the situation but prefers to focus on things within his control. Speaking to ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg, Allen said:
“I’m not the GM or the head coach. I try to focus on what I can control and support the guys who are here. I know James is working hard, and I hope everything gets resolved in time.”
Cook played a key role in Buffalo’s offense in 2024, leading the team with 1,009 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on 207 carries. Alongside Allen, the duo accounted for 18 rushing scores, helping the Bills average 136.7 rushing yards and 30.6 points per game—ranking ninth and second in the league, respectively.
Cook’s contributions were crucial during the team’s playoff run, including a touchdown performance in the AFC Championship game against Kansas City.
