Tennessee vols Zakai Zeigler Makes SEC History with Second Consecutive Defensive Player of the Year Award

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee senior guard Zakai Zeigler has made SEC history by winning the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year award for the second year in a row. This accomplishment places Zeigler among an elite group of players who have earned the honor multiple times, showcasing his outstanding defensive skills.

Zeigler’s back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year awards put him alongside great defenders like Jarvis Varnado of Mississippi State and Robert Williams of Texas A&M, who have also won the award twice. However, Zeigler stands out as the first player in SEC history to be named to the All-Defensive Team four consecutive times, demonstrating his consistent impact on defense throughout his college career.

Despite standing only 5-foot-9, Zeigler’s quickness, determination, and basketball IQ have made him a dominant defender. During the 2024-25 season, he averaged 13.6 points, 7.4 assists, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game. His leadership on defense helped Tennessee become one of the most efficient defensive teams in the country.

Beyond his defensive accolades, Zeigler also excelled offensively. He set a new SEC single-season record with 275 assists, breaking a mark that had lasted since 1980. His ability to run the offense while playing lockdown defense shows how valuable he is to the Volunteers.

Zeigler’s success has also been recognized nationally. He earned Third Team All-American honors and was a finalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year award. These honors highlight his individual excellence and contribution to Tennessee’s strong season.

Tennessee’s defense was further strengthened by teammate Jahmai Mashack, who joined Zeigler on the SEC All-Defensive Team. Mashack’s versatility and defensive skills complemented Zeigler’s, making Tennessee a tough opponent on that side of the ball.

As Zeigler wraps up his college career, his legacy at Tennessee is secure. His combination of leadership, defensive skill, and playmaking has set a high standard for future Volunteers. Zeigler’s achievements reflect his hard work and dedication, leaving a lasting impact on SEC basketball.

Looking ahead, Zeigler’s defensive intensity and court vision make him a promising professional prospect. From a three-star recruit to an SEC record-holder and two-time Defensive Player of the Year, his journey is a powerful example of determination and excellence.
