Left-handed pitcher Tyler Matzek has officially cleared waivers and opted not to accept an outright assignment to the minor leagues, the New York Yankees announced on Monday. Instead, the veteran has chosen to become a free agent.
Matzek, 34, made a brief stint with the Yankees this season, throwing 6 1/3 innings before being designated for assignment last week. During that time, he surrendered three earned runs, allowing 11 hits and issuing five walks—struggling with both command and contact.

Originally signed by the Yankees to a minor league contract in February, Matzek spent the early part of the season with Triple-A Syracuse. His contract was selected on April 22, giving him a chance to return to the majors. However, his opportunity was short-lived.
The decision to DFA Matzek was made to clear a roster spot for right-hander Jonathan Loáisiga, who was activated following his recovery from right ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) surgery performed in April 2024.
