Kentucky Coach Mark Pope Gives Key Update on Otega Oweh’s NBA Draft Decision
MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. – With the NBA Draft deadline looming, Kentucky head coach Mark Pope offered an exclusive update on Otega Oweh during a one-on-one interview with The Cats’ Pause, sharing insight into the star player’s decision-making process.
As of Tuesday, Oweh still hadn’t revealed whether he’ll stay in the 2024 NBA Draft or return to Lexington for another season. The deadline for an official decision is 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, and Pope admitted he’s just as eager as the rest of Big Blue Nation to find out.
“We’re communicating via text right now,” Pope said from the SEC Spring Meetings in Florida. “I’m trying to give him as much space as possible. The most important thing is where his heart is—that’s what will ultimately guide him.”
Two Clear Paths for Oweh
Oweh, Kentucky’s leading scorer last season, has a tough choice ahead: pursue his NBA dream now, or return to school to build his game and draft stock.
“If he feels like this is his moment, that he’s ready for the league, then he should go,” Pope said. “We want what’s best for him, and playing in the NBA has always been a dream for him.”
On the other hand, should Oweh decide there’s unfinished business in college basketball, Pope would welcome him back with open arms.
“If his heart tells him to come back, to run it back with us, to grow and improve here, then that’s what he should do,” Pope added. “This decision is going to come down to what’s inside his heart—because that’s what’s going to carry him through the next season, wherever he is.”
No Pressure, Only Support
While losing Oweh would be a significant blow for the new-look Wildcats, Pope insists his main priority is Oweh’s personal growth, not roster management.
“What’s best for Otega will end up being what’s best for Kentucky,” Pope said. “If he’s all-in on returning, that’s amazing for us. If his heart is already in the NBA, then that’s where he needs to be—and that’s okay. Because a player can only be great where his full heart is.”
Oweh has one final NBA team workout scheduled for Wednesday, meaning fans will likely have to wait until the last minute for an announcement.
“Otega has earned the right to take his time with this,” Pope emphasized. “He’s an extraordinary young man with an incredibly bright future. Whatever he chooses, I’m proud of him and excited to support him.”
