The Philadelphia Phillies are one of Major League Baseball’s powerhouses as the calendar is set to flip to June. They own the best winning percentage in the majors and the best record in the National League.
Entering Friday, the Phillies have won nine of the last 10 series and have the seventh-best run differential in baseball. The starting rotation is elite, the offense is rolling and the bullpen has turned things around after a disastrous start to the season.
It’s not often that a successful team like the Phillies becomes sellers, but with the July 31 trade deadline just over two months away, a few names could make sense as trade bait.
The Phillies could trade Brandon Marsh sooner than you think
The Phillies acquired Brandon Marsh from the Los Angeles Angels in 2022 for then-top catching prospect Logan O’Hoppe. The Phillies needed immediate outfield help, so they took a chance on Marsh, who was 24 years old at the time.
Fast forward to 2025, and O’Hoppe has turned into a key contributor on the Angels while Marsh hasn’t fully lived up to expectations with the Phillies. Marsh’s time in the City of Brotherly Love could come to an end sooner than most people think.
Marsh instantly became a fan favorite with the Phillies, with his outlandish look and vibrant personality. Unfortunately, the outfielder hasn’t quite had the production on the field as the team had hoped.
Marsh impressed to start his Phillies career. The left-handed hitter hit .288 with 14 extra-base hits in 41 games after being traded and helped the Phillies reach the World Series in 2022. He hit .277 with career highs in doubles (25), triples (six) and RBI (60) during his first full season with the team in 2023.
The 2024 season wasn’t kind to Marsh, as he hit .249 in 135 games, including a 0-for-23 stretch last July and a 0-for-18 stretch last August. The 2025 season hasn’t been much better through his first 36 games.
Marsh is slashing .220/.308/.308 with a .616 OPS, six extra-base hits and 10 RBI in 91 at-bats this year. He missed some time with a hamstring injury and made six rehab appearances in Triple-A, time away from the team that many hoped would help him figure things out at the plate.
Like his hitless streaks a season ago, Marsh endured a 0-for-31 stretch earlier this year before he landed on the IL. The 27-year-old hit .467 with three doubles and three RBI in his first 15 at-bats after returning from injury, but is hitting just .154 over his last six games with one extra-base hit.
The Phillies hoped Marsh could be a long-term answer as an everyday outfielder, but he hasn’t been able to shed a platoon role. With Johan Rojas showing improvement at the plate in 2025 and top outfield prospect Justin Crawford tearing it up in Triple-A, Marsh has become expendable.
Marsh has two years of team control left and won’t be a free agent until 2028. His services could be of interest to many teams in need of major league outfield depth, and his value could help the Phillies land an impactful player at the trade deadline.
