“Yankees Future Is HERE: George Lombard Jr. Makes HISTORY Alongside Jazz Chisholm – You Won’t Believe This Play!

If you’re going to pull off a clever defensive gem, it’s best to do it when someone important is watching — and that’s exactly what Yankees top prospect George Lombard Jr. managed Thursday night with Jazz Chisholm looking on in Somerset.

During the game, with Chisholm playing third base and a runner on first, Lombard Jr. executed a smart bit of trickery. On an infield pop-up behind pitcher JT Brubaker — also on a rehab assignment — Lombard Jr. let the ball drop intentionally before firing to first base. The first baseman quickly turned and threw to second, catching the runner in no man’s land. Whether or not it was a planned play, the heads-up execution drew praise — and clearly impressed Chisholm.

By the way, Brubaker also tossed four scoreless innings, which shouldn’t go unnoticed.

Pulling off a savvy, instinctive play at shortstop is becoming routine for Lombard Jr., who’s turning heads across baseball. A top prospect entering the year, he’s only climbed higher on evaluators’ lists, currently ranked No. 23 overall by Baseball America and firmly inside the top 50 in all major rankings.

Originally projected to reach the big leagues by 2027, Lombard Jr.’s rapid development — both at the plate and in the field — may speed up that timeline. In fact, he might be in position to take over third base in the Bronx as early as next season, possibly shifting Chisholm back to second base.

For now, the 19-year-old can be seen making highlight-reel plays for the Somerset Patriots almost nightly. Though he’s still adjusting to Double-A pitching and hitting just .206, his exceptional .356 on-base percentage shows his advanced plate discipline
