In a momentous celebration, Tamika Catchings has been officially named the greatest women’s basketball player in Tennessee Lady Vols history, surpassing legends like Chamique Holdsclaw and Candace Parker. This honor was solidified when Tennessee retired her iconic No. 24 jersey during a special ceremony at Thompson-Boling Arena.
Catchings’ illustrious career at Tennessee from 1997 to 2001 set new standards for excellence. She finished as Tennessee’s all-time leader in steals with 311 and ranked third in both points (2,113) and rebounds (1,004), showcasing her versatility and leadership. Her dominance on the court was evident as she also averaged 16.6 points per game over her career.
Her accolades include being named a four-time Kodak All-American and earning the 2000 Naismith Player of the Year award. Additionally, she was a key player on Tennessee’s 1997-98 undefeated national championship team (39-0), reflecting her status as one of the best players in college basketball during her tenure.
Beyond college, Catchings enjoyed a stellar professional career in the WNBA, playing for the Indiana Fever from 2002 to 2016. She was a 10-time WNBA All-Star, five-time Defensive Player of the Year, and led the Fever to a WNBA Championship in 2012, where she was named Finals MVP. Catchings also shone on the international stage, winning four Olympic gold medals as a key member of Team USA.
