Boston, MA – June 9, 2025 — The Boston Celtics have made a significant addition to their coaching staff, officially announcing that Celtics legend Paul Pierce is rejoining the franchise — this time in a new role as an assistant coach.
Pierce, a Hall of Famer and one of the most iconic players in Celtics history, will bring his championship experience, leadership, and deep knowledge of the game back to the TD Garden — not as a player this time, but as a mentor and strategist on the bench.
“I’m thrilled and honored to be coming back to Boston in this new capacity,” said Pierce in a team press release. “The Celtics have always been family to me, and I’m excited to help develop the next generation of Celtics players and contribute to our pursuit of another championship.”
Pierce spent 15 of his 19 NBA seasons with the Celtics after being drafted 10th overall in 1998. He was a 10-time All-Star, 2008 NBA Champion, and the Finals MVP that same year. Widely regarded as one of the greatest Celtics of all time, he ranks second in franchise history in points scored and is among the top five in numerous other categories.
Team President Brad Stevens expressed enthusiasm about the addition: “Paul brings a deep understanding of what it means to wear the Celtics jersey. His passion, work ethic, and high basketball IQ will be a tremendous asset to our coaching team and players.”
