As the Atlanta Braves inch closer to the 2025 MLB trade deadline, uncertainty is mounting around one of the team’s top-performing — and highest-paid — players.
Veteran designated hitter Marcell Ozuna, who is in the final season of a four-year, $65 million contract, may not finish the year in a Braves uniform, according to a recent report from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.
With the trade deadline set for July 31, Atlanta’s underwhelming 27–37 record has sparked speculation about potential roster moves if the team cannot reverse its fortunes soon.
Nightengale noted that while the Braves are unlikely to be full-scale sellers, Ozuna is one name who could be moved, especially since he is a pending free agent.
“No matter where Atlanta is at the trade deadline, the team isn’t expected to be a seller – with the possible exception of DH Marcell Ozuna,” he said.
Ozuna, a three-time All-Star, has remained a steady contributor despite the team’s overall struggles. He’s batting .257 with a .397 on-base percentage and a .430 slugging percentage.

Through 61 games, the slugger has racked up 10 home runs, 28 RBIs, and seven doubles. He also finished fourth in National League MVP voting in 2024, further highlighting his impact.
His potential departure would mark the end of a productive six-year stint in Atlanta, during which he helped power the team’s offense and served as a clubhouse leader. However, with the Braves still boasting a strong core — including 2024 Cy Young winner Chris Sale, a healthy Spencer Strider, and a resurgent Ronald Acuña Jr. — the front office may view Ozuna as a trade asset to retool without sacrificing the long-term competitive window.
As July approaches, all eyes will be on the Braves’ performance — and on whether Ozuna becomes one of the biggest names moved before the deadline.
