GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gators Softball program is set to pay tribute to one of its all-time greats by unveiling a sample statue of star pitcher Stacey Nelson, with installation scheduled to begin shortly. This celebration underscores Nelson’s transformative impact on the Gators, cementing her place in program lore.
Nelson’s dominance on the mound from 2006 to 2009 turned Florida into a national powerhouse. She retired as the Gators’ career leader with 136 wins, a 0.99 ERA, 60 shutouts, and 1,116 strikeouts, earning distinction as Florida’s first three-time NFCA First-Team All-American and a two-time SEC Pitcher of the Year . Her 2008 season alone was historic—she helped lead the Gators to their first-ever Women’s College World Series appearance and NCAA-record 70 wins, finishing with 47 victories, 363 strikeouts, and an astonishing 0.75 ERA .
Beyond her elite athleticism, Nelson excelled academically and in community service—earning ESPN The Magazine First-Team Academic All-America honors and being named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll . Known for her fierce competitiveness and leadership, she helped redefine Gators’ expectations both on and off the field.
The statue will stand proudly outside Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium, serving as a daily inspiration for future Gators. Head coach Tim Walton praised her influence, saying, “Stacey set the standard—her excellence in athletics, academics, and character laid the foundation for this program.”
