Naby Keita left Liverpool in the summer of 2023 after five years at Anfield and has since experienced a turbulent spell in his career.
Following a disappointing stint with Werder Bremen, the Guinean midfielder has found a new lease of life on loan at Hungarian champions Ferencvaros.
Keita’s time at Liverpool was blighted by injuries, limiting him to just eight Premier League appearances in his final campaign.
When his contract expired, he made a return to Germany, joining Werder Bremen on a free transfer.
However, his stay there quickly turned sour. After featuring only five times, he was dropped from the squad for refusing to travel when told he wouldn’t start against Bayer Leverkusen in April 2024.
In January, the 30-year-old secured a loan move to Ferencvaros, managed by former Liverpool striker Robbie Keane, where things began to look up. Keita played a key role as the club clinched the Nemzeti Bajnoksag I title last season and narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification after losing to Qarabag. They later booked a place in the Europa League group stage.
So far this season, Keita has made 10 appearances, registering two assists, and says he finally feels like himself again after years of setbacks.
“I’ve had a lot of injuries recently and couldn’t contribute much at Bremen,” Keita said.
“But here in Hungary, I’m playing regularly and starting to enjoy football again.”
