Newcastle United caught up a much needed boost in the Premier League on Saturday as they edged past Fulham FC 2-1 at home, courtesy of a dramatic 90th-minute strike by captain Bruno Guimarães.
The Magpies got off to a flying start when Jacob Murphy capitalised on a defensive error to give them the lead early on. Fulham fought back though, and the equaliser arrived via Sasa Lukic heading in after a rebound. With the game heading for a draw, Guimarães stepped up after substitute William Osula’s shot was saved, Bruno hammered home the rebound, securing the three points.
For manager Eddie Howe and the wider club, the result could mark a turning point. Having struggled for consistency this season, he stressed that the character shown in the final minutes coming off their recent European action was exactly what the team needed. In his view “The very best performance will be needed” in games like this.
Defensively, the club also got encouragement. New signing Malick Thiaw once again impressed, with Howe praising his composure under pressure in the latter stages of the game.
Despite the win, areas of concern remain. For example, forward William Osula is “not 100%” fit, leaving the club with something to monitor ahead of upcoming fixtures. On the transfer front, Newcastle appear active they’re reportedly lining up a €30 million move for Pierre Kalulu of Juventus as they look to reinforce the backline.
In all , so much joy on the way for Newcastle to triumph.
