Newcastle United are reportedly making a dramatic late push in the transfer window, having submitted a surprise offer for a £61 million-rated star once labelled “outstanding” by club legend Alan Shearer.
Newcastle dismiss Tonali speculation as “nonsense”
Deadline day began on an uneasy note for those at St James’ Park after reports emerged claiming Arsenal had made an approach to sign Sandro Tonali.
The Italian midfielder was allegedly being considered by Mikel Arteta following an injury setback to Mikel Merino, sparking immediate concern among Newcastle supporters.
However, those fears were swiftly put to rest.
The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards poured cold water on the story, revealing that Newcastle officials strongly rejected the claims and branded the rumours as “complete rubbish.” The club made it clear that Tonali is not for sale under any circumstances.
That firm stance is hardly surprising. Despite a challenging campaign overall, Tonali has grown into a key figure under Eddie Howe and is viewed internally as central to the club’s long-term project.
Losing him at this stage would be a significant blow, something Newcastle are keen to avoid.
With the Tonali chatter shut down, attention has turned back to Newcastle’s own recruitment plans.
The Magpies have been linked with several potential additions throughout the month, yet no major signings have arrived on Tyneside so far.
As the clock ticks down, there remains a question over whether that will change. One name still being discussed is Jhon Duran, the former Aston Villa forward who is keen on a return to the Premier League after an underwhelming stint at Al-Nassr.
A loan spell at Fenerbahce failed to reignite his form, and reports suggest his representatives have now offered him to Newcastle.
Duran is not the only high-profile option being considered. A defender currently at Real Madrid has also emerged as a late-window target.
Magpies test Real Madrid’s resolve over Dean Huijsen
According to reports from Spain, Newcastle have lodged an offer of around €40 million (£35m) for Dean Huijsen.
Real Madrid were quick to reject the bid, having only signed the former Bournemouth centre-back last summer for approximately £50m.
Los Blancos are said to have no intention of selling at a loss and would demand closer to €70m (£61m) before even considering a deal.
With deadline day approaching fast, Newcastle would need to move quickly — and significantly increase their offer.
At just 20 years old, Huijsen is regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young defenders.
Alan Shearer previously praised him alongside Illia Zabarnyi, describing both centre-backs as “outstanding” during their time together.
Huijsen could be an ideal long-term partner for Malick Thiaw, but Newcastle may ultimately find that this ambitious move comes too late to deliver a blockbuster finish to the window.
